McMurray’s Statement on Former Rep. Collins’ Impending Report to Prison

On news that convicted former Congressman Chris Collins is due to begin serving his sentence today at Federal Prison Camp in Pensacola, Florida, Nate McMurray, Democratic candidate for Congress in New York’s 27th Congressional District (NY-27) released the following statement:

“It has been a full year since Collins admitted he lied to the public and the FBI, and pled guilty to insider trading. Today, after months and months of delays, Donald Trump’s biggest supporter in Western New York, ex-congressman Chris Collins, is going to jail. He must now serve his 26-month sentence and finally pay his debt to Western New York.

“Today, our district—not with glee, but feeling the full weight of this moment after so much abuse and suffering—is given the justice we deserve. For decades Western New Yorkers have been subjected to self-interested Republican politicians like Tom Reynolds, Chris Lee, and then Chris Collins, all of whom systematically used the communities and families of NY-27 and elevated their own political and financial aspirations above the healthcare, infrastructure, and economic policies that truly would have improved the lives of the people they served.

“Collins in particular repeatedly lied to, then utterly failed, Western New Yorkers when he had to resign and leave the NY-27 region with no federal representation through the apex of the worst health crisis in 100 years. And the fallout from Collins’ selfishness persists. NY-27’s newly seated congressman, Chris Jacobs, has in short order shown himself to be just another incompetent, self-interested Republican who is beholden to Trump and his failed policies rather than the public he claims to serve.

“Today Western New Yorkers can turn the page and look forward, knowing that criminals like Chris Collins, Roger Stone, Michael Flynn, and Paul Manafort, can and will be held responsible—and that justice will be served today and on November 3rd.”
